The City of Portsmouth Preserved Transport Depot
Broad Street
The Final Open Day

Sunday 9 March 2003
An introduction by the CPPTD Chairman
This day marked the end of an era as the final running day at Broad
Street Depot took place. After more than ten years of short term leases and
sometimes surviving a week at a time Portsmouth City Council have decided to
sell the land on which our depot sits for redevelopment.
PCC have however agreed to a) assist us financially with moving
to temporary storage and b) to assist us with finding long-term museum premises
in Portsmouth.
The past ten years and more of our work at Broad Street has
been appreciated by both transport enthusiasts and casual visitors, with a trip
on the buses being a regular event for some families. They will miss us as we go
and indeed we will miss many of our regular visitors. There is also the non
public side of our work, restoring and maintaining the vehicles and this will
continue to take place at Warnford and East Meon before we return to Portsmouth.
Dave Norman pays tribute to the often unseen band of volunteers elsewhere in
this publication.
In the immediate future most of the collection will be going to
storage in the Meon Valley but we will not be able to open the building up to
the public. Our running vehicles, and we hope to add to their number whilst we
are away, will be taken to as many rallies, carnivals, fetes, etc as we can,
most notably the Southsea Spectacular on 8 June 2003.
We are sad to report that as well as having to move we also see
the end of the collection as a whole, with Guy Arab 55 returning to its owners
in Fareham and Portsmouth City Council Museums & Records Service having
decided at late notice to send their vehicles elsewhere. We understand that the
Thornycroft, TD4 open topper and TD2 Tower Wagon are going to the Milestones
Museum in Basingstoke and the Trolleybus to Hampshire Museums Service store near
Winchester, whilst the PD2 closed top (ORV) will be at Eastney (Steam Museum
area) under the care of the Meridian Trust.
We would like to think that when we return to Portsmouth in
2004 /2005 these vehicles would return to us but realistically we believe this
is unlikely without support from Portsmouth Councillors. This will mean that the
story of passenger transport in Portsmouth will be dispersed across Hampshire
and not together in one location. A sad state of affairs.
Today, however, we want to mark the success of the last ten
years and articles from my predecessors tell of some of the events that have
occurred along the way.
We hope that you will want to stay in contact with us and
support our continuing efforts to relocate back to Portsmouth. Our support
group, the Friends of CPPTD, receives regular bulletins and will be the first to
know of our future plans. A membership application form is included.
The end of one era and the start of a new one we hope to see
you again in the future.
Philip Marfleet
As well as our usual services we held a Cavalcade of Buses,
Which travelled past The Hard, along Queens Street to Commercial
Road, along the Seafront to Eastney Steam Museum, with a photo spot so all
vehciles could reassemble, and back along the seafront to the depot between 2.30
& 3.30pm.
Views shown below were taken by following the cavalcade, seen on the 9th March 2003.
